Why we do this
Strangers shouldn’t be able to look up where you live.
Type a name into a people-search site and you get a home address, a phone number, an age and a list of relatives. For most people that’s unsettling. For a nurse with a difficult patient, a journalist with an angry reader, or someone who left a bad relationship, it’s dangerous.
The sites that publish this information make money from it, so they make opting out as slow and confusing as they’re allowed to. Most people never finish. Most never start, because they’ve never heard of the sites in the first place.
